Carbon intensity today

UK Carbon Intensity Today

A guide to today's electricity carbon intensity in Great Britain, linking the live emissions signal to renewables, gas and demand.

Current readings unavailable

This page does not include a verified current observation. The interactive dashboard requests the latest available source data and labels its observation period. If that request fails, current values remain unavailable; archived reports are not substituted.

Great Britain covers England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland operates in a separate electricity market.

What carbon intensity means today

Electricity carbon intensity estimates the grams of CO2-equivalent emitted for each kilowatt-hour consumed. Lower values usually appear when wind, solar, nuclear and other low-carbon sources make up more of the mix.

Today's carbon intensity can move from one settlement period to the next, so it is best read alongside renewable share, gas share and demand.

Using the signal

For flexible electricity use, look for lower-carbon windows where renewable share is strong and gas generation is lower. Price and carbon signals can overlap, but they are not the same thing.

For flexible electricity use, the cleanest opportunities are likely to appear when wind is strong, gas is low and demand is not at a peak. This is the foundation for future EV-charging guidance, clean-electricity alerts and weekly newsletter summaries.

FAQs

What is a good carbon intensity today?

There is no single fixed threshold. Lower is better, and the most useful comparison is against nearby periods today and settled daily or weekly reports.

Is carbon intensity live or settled?

The dashboard signal is live or near-live. Settled historical summaries are more stable for comparison and citation.
